This year C100 was proud to present the “2018 Leadership Award for Advancing U.S.-China Relations” to three outstanding honorees: Mr. Chen Tianqiao, Founder of Shanda Group and the Tianqiao & Chrissy Chen Institute, and C100 members Mr. Ken Xie, Founder, Chair, and CEO of Fortinet, and Ambassador Linda Tsao Yang, Chair Emerita of the Asian Corporation Governance Association. Chen and Xie were recognized individually for their Lifetime Achievement as Tech Entrepreneurs. Ambassador Yang was recognized as the Honorary Conference Co-Chair and for her lifetime achievement in Diplomatic Service, having been appointed by President Clinton as the U.S. Executive Director and Ambassador to the Board of the Asian Development Bank. The Leadership Award for Advancing U.S.-China Relations is granted to individuals who have demonstrated service, leadership and dedication to strengthening the U.S.-China relationship.

The Committee of 100 also honored Dr. David M. Lampton with the “Lifetime Achievement Award for Advancing U.S.-China Relations” in recognition of his lifelong leadership in promoting constructive relations between the U.S. and China. Dr. Lampton is Hyman Professor and Director of China Studies at the prestigious Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and has been a member of C100’s Advisory Council since 2007. C100 Governor and Co-Founder Henry Tang and C100 President Frank H. Wu presented Dr. Lampton with the award. Dr. Lampton stated, “I want to commend C100 for all you’ve done and I would just say you are more important than ever. We are entering…terra-incognita in U.S.-China relations and I think we all have to work very hard to make this the productive kind of relationship it should be.”

C100 Conference Co-Chair Ken Fong presented Chen Tianqiao’s award. Chen addressed his old and new friends in his acceptance speech and stated, “I am so honored to be here tonight and very humbled to accept this award from C100. I have a lot of respect [for] this prestigious group of people and [am] impressed by the mission. Thank you very much.”

Dr. Yang Bin, Vice President and Provost of Tsinghua University, flew from Beijing to attend the C100 Conference and personally present C100 Conference Co-Chair and Tsinghua alumnus Ken Xie with the leadership award. Dr. Yang acknowledged “one of our distinguished alumni, Mr. Ken Xie, who is a true pride of Tsinghua University…I am here to say thanks to you from Tsinghua because you inspired many dreams of Tsinghua-ers, American, Chinese, and beyond.”

C100 President Frank H. Wu and C100 member Calvin Tsao presented Ambassador Yang with the leadership award. Tsao, who is Ambassador Yang’s nephew, delivered remarks on behalf of the family. As a distinguished architect and C100 member, Tsao shared personal reminiscences and thanked his Aunt Linda and her late husband for encouraging him in his dream to pursue architecture.

SUMMIT

The full-day summit took place earlier in the day and included more than 20 distinguished speakers, three panel discussions and two fireside chats that addressed a variety of topics: U.S.-China Trade and Economic Outlook, Belt and Road Initiative, Tech Entrepreneurism in Silicon Valley and China, Artificial Intelligence and Chinese Americans in Public Service. This year’s summit featured Ambassador Chas FreemanMr. Jin Liqun, and Ambassador Gary Locke as keynote speakers.

Conference keynote speakers all addressed the pressing issues and tensions surrounding free trade and emphatically reinforced the importance of avoiding major trade conflicts. Ambassador Freeman opened by highlighting, “The United States and China are each too globalized and dynamic to contain, too big and influential to ignore, and too successful and entangled with each other to divorce without bankrupting ourselves and all associated with us.” Jin Liqun advocated for cooperation stating, “I hope [for future generations] the United States and China will remain friendly and cooperative.” Lastly, Locke noted, “[It’s] imperative that the two countries continue to work together and engage constructively.”

Following Ambassador Locke’s luncheon keynote speech, C100 member Buck Gee held a fireside chat with fellow member Michelle Lee where she discussed her journey to public service. The summit concluded with an engaging fireside chat on artificial intelligence between Dr. Fei-Fei Li, Chief Scientist at Google Cloud AI/ML, and C100 member Jerry Yang, Co-Founder of Yahoo!

TOWN HALL

The C100 Town Hall on May 6 featured discussions on Chinese American leadership and addressed important issues concerning the Chinese American community nationwide. C100 members Chi-Foon ChanTony ChanWalter Wang, and Janet Yang shared their personal “Chinese American Journeys”. “Chinese American Journeys” is a series of TED-style presentations that showcase the inspiring stories of extraordinary Chinese Americans and how they have become leaders in their respective fields. C100 members from diverse walks of life share stories of their passions and inspirations, their journeys to success, and the lessons they learned along the way. Past “Chinese American Journey” presentations can be accessed on C100’s YouTube channel, Committee100. Following the “Chinese American Journeys” was a discussion on “Women’s Leadership: A Conversation with Jenny Ming and Anna Mok.” The Town Hall concluded with a panel of C100 members moderated by C100 member Lanhee Chen. C100 members strongly encouraged the next generation of Chinese Americans to remain informed and involved in topics that affect our communities. Asian Americans are the fastest-growing ethnic and racial group in the U.S. and have an important role to play in shaping the future of this diverse country.

Prior to the C100 Town Hall, Sherry Chen, an award-winning federal hydrologist who was wrongfully prosecuted as a Chinese spy, shared her personal story of being racially profiled and unjustly terminated from her job by the Department of Commerce. Chen was recently vindicated in an appeal to the Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB) where the judge ruled that Chen had been a “victim of gross injustice” and ordered her to be restored to her job and to receive back pay and benefits, but the Department of Commerce has yet to comply and has signaled its intention to appeal the MSPB decision.
