United States Congresswoman Judy Chu to Deliver the Gala Keynote at Committee of 100’s Annual Conference & Gala

18th April 2023

New York, NY (April 18, 2023) – Committee of 100, a non-profit organization of prominent Chinese Americans, today announced that United States Congresswoman Judy Chu (D-California), will deliver the Gala keynote the evening of May 5 at Committee of 100’s annual Conference & Gala. In 2009, Representative Chu became the first Chinese American woman in history elected to Congress.

Representative Chu was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in July 2009.  She represents the 28th Congressional District, which includes Pasadena and the west San Gabriel Valley of southern California. Representative Chu is the Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus and currently serves on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, which has jurisdiction over legislation pertaining to taxes, revenues, Social Security, and Medicare. In that Committee, Representative Chu is a member of the Subcommittees on Health, giving her oversight over healthcare reform and crucial safety net programs, Worker and Family Support, and Oversight. She also serves on the House Small Business Committee, which has oversight of the Small Business Administration.  Congresswoman Chu’s leadership has been especially valuable to the Chinese American and broader Asian American community. As Chair of CAPAC, she has led the Congressional effort to fight anti-Asian hate, including efforts to root out racist language in legislation and bring an end to the China Initiative.

Representative Chu was first elected to the Board of Education for Garvey School District in 1985.  From there, she was elected to the Monterey Park City Council, where she served as Mayor three times.  She then was elected to the State Assembly and then California’s elected tax board, known as the State Board of Equalization.  In 2009, she became the first Chinese American woman elected to Congress in history. This year’s Conference & Gala theme is “Seeking Common Ground in Turbulent Times.” For three decades, Committee of 100’s Conference & Gala has convened distinguished academics, policymakers, businesses, and next-generation leaders from across the U.S. for a series of discussions, debates, keynotes, and networking sessions. Participants share a common goal of advocating for and promoting the full participation of all Chinese Americans in American society.

Committee of 100’s annual Conference & Gala will take place at the Signia by Hilton San Jose May 5-6. Content will focus on diplomacy, economic interdependence, education, technology, anti-Asian hate, and more.

In the coming weeks, panel discussions, breakouts, additional award winners, and keynote speakers will be announced. Registration for the Conference & Gala is now available here.
