New York, NY (November 23, 2021) — The following statement was issued today by Zheng Yu Huang, President of Committee of 100, regarding redistricting that is impacting AAPI representation at the federal and local levels:

“Drawing of congressional district maps based on census data is one of the most important undertakings in our political and governmental processes. But these maps need to be drawn fairly so that they represent the growing constituents of the districts. The Chinese American and overall AAPI community already suffers from a lack of representation at the federal and local levels and we need to ensure that representatives of these communities across the nation have a fair and equitable opportunity.

For example, in California, the redistricting currently underway could dramatically impact the AAPI representation in the United States Congress – affecting both major political parties – and potentially setting back AAPI communities after decades of progress. This is unfair and marginalizes the many thousands of AAPI constituents who live in those districts.

Committee of 100 is calling for fair and equal representation during redistricting to ensure that communities with significantly impactful populations of Chinese and Asian Americans continue to be heard and politically empowered.”
