C100 Members Host Lunch with Ma Weihua, former President of China Merchants Bank

On October 5, 2015 Committee of 100 members hosted a casual lunch with the former President of China Merchants Bank and current Chairman of the One Foundation, Dr. Ma Weihua, and his colleagues at Le Cirque in New York City. Participating C-100 members included Chairman Emeritus Clarence Kwan, governors Henry Tang and Shirley Young, board of director Anla Cheng, and members Betty Liu, and Ted Wang. A wide range of topics were discussed during the casual lunch including the future of China’s economy, the emergence of wealth and philanthropy, and the role of global actors like Chinese Americans and the United Nations on China’s development.

Dr. MA Weihua
Economist, Former CEO of China Merchants Bank, Chairman of One Foundation

Dr. Ma Weihua currently serves as the Chairman of Wing Lung Bank Ltd, Chairman of China Business Initiative of Columbia University, Member of the 12th National Committee of the CPPCC, Chairman of One Foundation, Vice Chairman of China Chamber of International Commerce, and a Member of the Emerging Markets Advisory Council of Institute of International Finance. He is the former Executive Director, President and CEO of China Merchants Bank, a position he held until he retired in May 2013.

He was previously the Chairman of the Board of Directors for CIGNA & CMC Life Insurance Company Ltd. and China Merchants Fund Management Co. Ltd.. Dr. Ma was a Deputy to the 10th National People’s Congress (NPC) and a Member of the 11th and 12th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). In addition, he holds positions in many organizations, including Vice Chairman of China Chamber of International Commerce. Dr. Ma also teaches as an adjunct professor in several top Chinese universities including Peking University and Tsinghua University.

Before joining China Merchants Bank, Dr. Ma served in multiple government positions, including Deputy Director of the General Office of PBOC, Deputy Director of the Finance and Planning Office of PBOC, as well as Governor ofPBOC Hainan Branch and Chief of SAFE Hainan Branch. Dr. Ma has served in multiple international educational and research institutes, social organizations and industry associations. He is now the Chairman of China Business Initiative of ColumbiaUniversity, a Member of the Emerging Markets Advisory Council of Institute of International Finance, a Member of the Global Council of International Finance Forum, a Member of the Advisory Council of City of London, and a Member of the Advisory Board of New York Financial Consulting Committee. Dr. Ma holds a PH.D. in Economics.
