Groundbreaking Research Shows Americans Favor Cooperation with China, Despite Washington’s Tough Approach Press Release Demo

21st January 2026

The State of Chinese Americans Survey delivers stark insights into U.S.-China rhetoric at the national level.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New York, NY — Committee of 100, a nonprofit membership organization of prominent Chinese Americans, and NORC at the University of Chicago, one of the largest independent social research organizations in the United States, today released new findings in their ongoing State of Chinese Americans research. For the first time, the study reached beyond the Chinese American population to survey the general American public about issues relevant to Chinese Americans and U.S.-China relations.

“This third iteration of the State of Chinese Americans research is more expansive and broad-reaching than ever before,” said Alex Chew, NORC AmeriSpeak Director and head of Amplify AAPI. “Surveying the populous at large allows us to have a full picture of the perception of the general public on issues impacting the Chinese American community.”

The report, the first of several that will be releasing this year, outlines several stark conclusions on U.S.-China cooperation and the impact of current political rhetoric on this topic on the national level. Compelling conclusions include: a bipartisan consensus on desiring increased U.S.-China cooperation (59%) and that a majority of Americans (54%) believe China-related rhetoric by President Donald Trump negatively impacts the treatment of Chinese Americans in the United States.

“Americans across party lines recognize that the U.S. and China can be competitors without becoming adversaries,“ said Committee of 100 president, Paul Cheung. “People across the political spectrum see real value in the two countries working together, even as they compete.”
