Committee of 100’s “Forging America’s Promise” gala takes place on September 28 in Washington, D.C.
NEW YORK (August 27, 2026) — Ang Lee, award-winning director of iconic films “Life of Pi,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” and “Brokeback Mountain” among others, sits down with Janet Yang, former President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. At the fireside chat, Lee and Yang will discuss his life, career, and next film project, “Gold Mountain,” described as a “period adventure with a sharp con-artist backbone.”
Yang, who now chairs the board of Chinese American nonprofit Committee of 100, will host this conversation at the organization’s September 28 “Forging America’s Promise” awards gala in Washington, D.C., where Lee will also be one of the evening’s honorees.
“Ang has continued to transcend boundaries and challenge Hollywood norms with his unique vision,” said Yang. “His success demonstrates the power of merging Eastern and Western visions, stories, and perspectives; I am thrilled to have this conversation about his impactful work, which has resonated with so many.”
Lee, who arrived in the United States from Taiwan to study in 1978 and eventually completed a Masters Degree in Film Production at New York University, broke into Hollywood with 1995’s “Sense and Sensibility.” Five years later, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” brought wuxia cinema, the Chinese tradition of martial arts storytelling, to audiences around the world.
Lee’s next film, “Gold Mountain,” is based on the C. Pam Zheng’s novel “How Much of These Hills is Gold.” The story follows two Chinese American immigrants confronting the Western frontier at the end of the California Gold Rush.
