Stockholm Internat'l Composers Festival:
Tan Dun

Nov. 8th – 11th, 2007

In a unique week long celebration of Tan Dun, the Stockholm International Composers Festival in Stockholm, Sweden along with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, will present many of Tan Dun's milestone compositions including a world premiere concerto for zheng and orchestra, a new production of opera Tea as well as several orchestral and chamber music works.

Tea Around the World

Opera Tea: A Mirror of Soul first premiered at Suntory Hall, Japan in 2002 and has since enjoyed world wide recognition as an astounding musical accomplishment. With previous performances in Amsterdam (2003 and 2005), Lyon (2004) and New Zealand (2006), Tea will be celebrated around the world with three brand new productions in 2007:

The Map of Asia - Baltimore Symphony Orchestra

In a three concert series entitled "The Map of Asia", the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in Baltimore, Maryland, will perform Tan Dun's The Map: Concerto for Cello, Video and Orchestra with cello solos by Ilya Finkelshteyn. Tan Dun will conduct The Map as well as Shostakovich's Overture on Russian and Kirghiz Folk Themes and Borodin's Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor. Performances are scheduled at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall for October 12, 13 and 14, 2007.

BAM and Brooklyn Philharmonic Present The Gate, New York Premiere

The New York premiere of Tan Dun's The Gate—part of the Tan Dun's Orchestral Theatre series—will be presented in a co-production by BAM: Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Brooklyn Philharmonic. Each evening's program will begin with a performance of Tan Dun's Water Music—a percussive work comprising of rhythms and melodies made solely with water.

Piano Concerto premiered by Lang Lang World Premiere

The new Piano Concerto will be Tan Dun's second commission from the New York Philharmonic (Kurt Masur premiered his Water Concerto for Water Percussion and Orchestra) and will premiere with the internationally acclaimed pianist Lang Lang in April, 2008. Avery Fisher Hall, New York, New York

Encore Performances of The First Emperor

The Metropolitan Opera has announced that after a sold-out premiere run, Tan Dun's opera, The First Emperor, will receive encore performances in the 2007-08 season. Placido Domingo will repeat the title role alongside Sarah Coburn, Susanne Mentzer, Paul Groves, and Hao Jiang Tian. Performances scheduled for May 10, 14, and 17, 2008.
