C-100 Member Professor Ray Wu Passed Away on Feb. 10, 2008

It is with great sadness that we hear the passing of Committee of 100 member Professor Ray Wu who served as the Liberty Hyde Bailey Professor in the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology at Cornell University.

Professor Wu’s research has resulted in major breakthroughs in DNA biochemistry and molecular biology. He developed the first method for determining the nucleotide sequence of DNA in 1970. He has been working on projects related to rice biotechnology since 1988. He has developed insect-resistant, drought and salt-tolerant transgenic rice plants, with the goal of producing more food to feed the growing population.

He has published over 200 peer-reviewed research papers, including over 70 related to cloning or sequencing of genes, over 50 related to plant molecular biology, over 30 related to plant biotechnology, and 30 related to cancer biology. He has edited twelve books related to recombinant DNA or transgenic plants.

Dr. Wu is an honorary professor in over ten universities in China. He has served on many national and international advisory committees and received numerous honors and awards.

Professor Wu became a member of Committee of 100 in 1998 and we had the pleasure of having him attend the last DC conference in 2005 with his family.
